Introduction

The Parliament is Budapest's most majestic, splendid architectural landmark—a grand building on the Danube known for its intricate Gothic spires and great dome; seat of the Hungarian parliament and unquestionably Budapest's number-one attraction. The Hungarian Parliament stands on the Pest side of the Danube—seat of the Hungarian parliament and one of the most majestic, beautiful parliament buildings in Europe and the world. Built in the early 20th century at the height of Austro-Hungarian prosperity, it is known for its grand scale and intricate Gothic Revival style: a long, symmetric facade full of countless intricate Gothic spires, carvings and arched windows—solemn and gorgeous; at the center rises a grand, striking dome. The whole building stands by the river, majestic—the brightest landmark on Budapest's skyline. The interior is likewise gilded and gorgeous—grand central hall, gilded dome, grand staircases, and Hungary's coronation regalia (the Holy Crown etc.)—all showing Hungary's glory and history. Visitors can admire the grand panorama from the Danube bank or from Buda Castle across the river (especially at night, the gilded Parliament reflected in the Danube is extremely romantic); or, by reservation and guided tour, enter the interior to see the gilded halls and the national treasures.
