Introduction

Sansad Bhavan (Parliament House) stands at the western end of Raisina Hill in New Delhi. Completed in 1927, it was the centerpiece of the new imperial capital designed by Edwin Lutyens and Herbert Baker. The circular colonnaded building, about 170 metres across, is wrapped in red sandstone columns around a central legislative chamber and anchors the ceremonial axis of Kartavya Path together with Rashtrapati Bhavan and India Gate. Since the adjacent new Parliament Building opened on 28 May 2023, the old building has been renamed Samvidhan Sadan and no longer hosts day-to-day parliamentary business.

💡 Tips

• Early morning or the hour before sunset throws side light across the colonnade and brings out the facade.
• Look back from the middle of Kartavya Path to frame the circular old building together with Rashtrapati Bhavan.
• April to June afternoons in Delhi are punishing — avoid the 12:00–16:00 window.
• Security is strict: large bags, tripods and drones are impractical here.
• Don't confuse the two: the circular building is the 1927 Parliament House, the triangular one is the 2023 new Parliament Building.
• This is a working government district — keep clear of sentry posts and checkpoints when photographing.
