Introduction

Osaka Aquarium Kaiyukan is one of the world's largest aquariums. Themed on "Life of the Pacific Rim Volcanic Zone," with a giant whale shark tank at its core — whale sharks (world's largest fish) and manta rays in a 9 m deep, 5,400-ton Pacific tank — and ecosystems from Japanese forests to Antarctic ice, it is Osaka's most iconic attraction and a world-class aquarium experience. Designed by architect Yano Ayako, opened 1990 — the building concept is the Pacific Ring of Fire. The interior follows the Pacific Rim — from Japanese forests (giant salamanders) through Monterey Bay, Gulf of Panama, Ecuador, Tasman Sea, New Zealand, Antarctica, Chilean Pacific, to the Pacific tank (9 m deep, 5,400 tons) — whale sharks and manta rays swim here, Kaiyukan's icon. The route spirals from the 8th floor down to the 1st, each tank a Pacific ecosystem.
