Osaka Castle Main Tower stands within Osaka Castle Park in Chuo Ward and is one of Japan's most iconic castles. Toyotomi Hideyoshi ordered the original castle built in 1583 as a symbol of national unification; it was later destroyed by war and lightning. The current keep was rebuilt in 1931 with public donations, recreating the Azuchi-Momoyama style exterior in reinforced concrete, and was extensively renovated into a museum in 1997. The 55-meter tower has five external tiers and eight internal floors, with an observation deck on the top floor offering 360-degree views of Osaka. Inside, exhibits cover the history of Hideyoshi and the Tokugawa era, arms, armor and a replica of the golden tea room, making it a key place to understand Japan's late Sengoku to Edo history.

Osaka Aquarium Kaiyukan is one of the world's largest aquariums. Themed on "Life of the Pacific Rim Volcanic Zone," with a giant whale shark tank at its core — whale sharks (world's largest fish) and manta rays in a 9 m deep, 5,400-ton Pacific tank — and ecosystems from Japanese forests to Antarctic ice, it is Osaka's most iconic attraction and a world-class aquarium experience. Designed by architect Yano Ayako, opened 1990 — the building concept is the Pacific Ring of Fire. The interior follows the Pacific Rim — from Japanese forests (giant salamanders) through Monterey Bay, Gulf of Panama, Ecuador, Tasman Sea, New Zealand, Antarctica, Chilean Pacific, to the Pacific tank (9 m deep, 5,400 tons) — whale sharks and manta rays swim here, Kaiyukan's icon. The route spirals from the 8th floor down to the 1st, each tank a Pacific ecosystem. Visiting to see the world's largest fish up close in a giant tank and Pacific Rim ecosystems is a stunning, brilliant family experience in Osaka.

Osaka Castle Park surrounds the castle built by Toyotomi Hideyoshi in the 16th century; its keep, layered white walls crowned with golden shachihoko, is one of Japan's three great castles. The moat, stone walls and cherry-blossom gate preserve the Sengoku flavour, and in spring about 3,000 sakura make it among Kansai's finest hanami spots. The grounds hold the Nishinomaru Garden, Toyokuni Shrine and the castle museum; the top deck overlooks the city and the Yodo River. History, blossoms and skyline meet here, Osaka's most iconic landmark.

Dotonbori is Osaka's liveliest artery of food and entertainment, unfolding along the Dotonbori Canal. Giant neon signs, the Glico running man, the moving crab of Kani Doraku, a giant Tigers figure, symbolise Kansai nightlife; both banks brim with restaurants, theatres and alleys fragrant with takoyaki, kushikatsu and okonomiyaki. A yakatabune boat cruise or a walk across Ebisubashi shows the lights and crowds at their best. It is the very definition of kuidaore, eat till you drop in Osaka, and the front row to Kansai's warm, boisterous spirit.

Rising 103 metres over the Shinsekai district, the current Tsutenkaku was completed in 1956 on the site of a 1912 original that mimicked the Eiffel Tower and the Arc de Triomphe. Hitachi neon signs wrap the lattice body, and the roughly 91-metre observation deck looks out over Tennoji and, on clear days, toward Osaka Bay. Inside sits the Billiken, a puckish god of things as they ought to be; rubbing his soles for luck is a local ritual.
