Nara Park is an open urban park of about 660 hectares, famous for free-roaming wild deer—revered as divine messengers, gentle and approachable; you can buy shika-senbei crackers from vendors to feed them, a favourite for families and photographers. The park links World Heritage sites and national treasures: Tōdai-ji (with the world's largest wooden hall and Great Buddha), Kasuga Taisha and Kōfuku-ji, beautiful in cherry blossom and autumn leaves alike. Just an hour from Kyoto or Osaka, Nara Park blends natural charm with deep history—plan half a day to wander.

Todai-ji is a grand, solemn thousand-year temple in Nara, famed for its huge wooden hall and the Great Buddha - a sacred site. In Nara Park, a World Heritage site. Its Great Buddha Hall (Daibutsuden) is among the world's largest wooden buildings, housing the great bronze Buddha (about 15 m). A pillar has a hole the size of the Buddha's nostril - said to bring luck if you pass through. The Nandaimon gate has fierce Kongo Rikishi statues. Deer roam nearby. A sacred site - reverent.

Opened in 1895 on the edge of Nara Park, near Kofuku-ji and Kasuga Taisha, the Nara National Museum's Original Building is an elegant Meiji-era brick pile in French Renaissance style — itself a designated Important Cultural Property. Its heart is Buddhist art: around 3,800 National Treasures and Important Cultural Properties, from Asuka-era gilt-bronze Buddhas and portraits of Prince Shotoku to sutras, screens and sword fittings, tracing fourteen centuries of Japanese Buddhist art. Each autumn the Shoso-in Exhibition displays treasures from the Todai-ji repository — a highlight of Japan's art calendar that draws huge crowds. Step outside and the park's free-roaming deer await.

The Museum of Calligraphy in Honour of Kason Sugioka in Nara commemorates the calligrapher Kason Sugioka (1913–2008), a native of Nara. Its collection covers his works and materials; the elegant building makes it a small specialist venue for modern Japanese calligraphy.

Kasuga Taisha is an ancient, sacred famous shrine in Nara, hidden in a green forest, famed for thousands of stone and bronze lanterns - solemn and mysterious. In eastern Nara Park, at the foot of Mt. Kasuga, a World Heritage site. Hidden in a primeval forest; a path through ancient trees and deer leads to it. Its thousands of stone lanterns line the path, and hundreds of bronze lanterns hang under the veranda. On special days (Setsubun, Obon) the lanterns are lit (Mantoro) - magical. A sacred site - reverent.

Kofuku-ji is an ancient, solemn famous temple in Nara, famed for its pretty five-story pagoda and precious Buddhist statues - heavy with history. West of Nara Park, near Kintetsu Nara. Once the family temple of the Fujiwara clan, a World Heritage site. Its iconic five-story pagoda reflects in the Sarusawa Pond. The Treasure Hall holds exquisite Buddhist statues, including the famous Ashura statue. East Golden Hall, North Round Hall. A sacred site.
