Introduction

The Kumamoto Prefectural Museum of Art stands in the Ninomaru Park corner of Kumamoto Castle, a comprehensive museum of some 5,400 works from ancient to modern times, centered on Kumamoto-related art, Higo Buddhist sculpture and crafts of the Hosokawa clan (lords of Higo) from the Eisei Bunko collection. The main building is a modernist design by architect Horiguchi Sutemi; since 2008 the Eisei Bunko collection has been on permanent display. The cafe and terrace overlook Kumamoto Castle, forming a cultural stroll with the castle.
