Fujisaki hachimangū
Fujisaki Hachimangu is the chief shrine of Kumamoto's Chuo Ward, said to have been welcomed from Iwashimizu Hachimangu in 935 by imperial order and named for the Fujiwara whip that took root. One of Kyushu's five branch shrines, it moved to this site after its halls burned in the 1877 Satsuma Rebellion; its September festival is famed for the god-procession and sixty-plus decorated horses.

Kumamoto Art Museum
The Kumamoto Prefectural Museum of Art stands in the Ninomaru Park corner of Kumamoto Castle, a comprehensive museum of some 5,400 works from ancient to modern times, centered on Kumamoto-related art, Higo Buddhist sculpture and crafts of the Hosokawa clan (lords of Higo) from the Eisei Bunko collection. The main building is a modernist design by architect Horiguchi Sutemi; since 2008 the Eisei Bunko collection has been on permanent display. The cafe and terrace overlook Kumamoto Castle, forming a cultural stroll with the castle.
