Introduction

Enoshima Aquarium ('Enosui') opened in 1954 and was rebuilt on Katase Beach in 2004, unusual among Japanese aquariums for curating the very waters outside its walls: Sagami Bay and the Pacific. The Sagami Bay tank holds some 100 species and 20,000 animals, most famously a shimmering school of 8,000 sardines swirling in synchrony under lighting and simulated waves. The Jellyfish Fantasy Hall drifts 14 species through colour-lit tanks and 3D projection like an art installation. The museum also displays the real 'Shinkai 2000' submersible that once dived 2,000 metres, and tanks explaining Shonan's shirasu whitebait culture. Outdoors, the dolphin stadium uses Sagami Bay and, on clear days, Mt Fuji as its backdrop — the Shonan coast's favourite family stop.
