Introduction

Hokoku-ji in Jomyoji, Kamakura, is a Rinzai Zen temple of the Kencho-ji branch, founded in 1334 by founding abbot Tengan Eiko (Butsudo Zenji) under patron Ashikaga Ietoki, serving as the family temple of the Ashikaga and Uesugi clans. The main hall holds a Shaka Nyorai statue attributed to Takuma Hogen, a city Important Cultural Property; behind it the 'bamboo garden' grows some 2,000 moso culms, with the Kyuko-an tea seat deep in the shade. One of only two Kamakura temples with three Michelin Green Guide stars, alongside Tokei-ji.
