Introduction

Yasui Konpiragu in Higashiyama, Kyoto, enshrines a branch of Kotohira-gu and is famed for its 'en-kiri / en-musubi' faith of cutting bad ties and tying good ones. Its signature 'en-kiri stone' is a boulder covered with paper figures; worshippers crawl through the hole and paste a paper to sever bad relationships — one of Japan's most talked-about love shrines. Revived around 1670 by the Yasui family, it sits on the slope between Kiyomizu-dera and Yasaka Shrine, a handy stop on the Higashiyama walk, open all seasons.
