Introduction

The Kunsthistorisches Museum stands beside Vienna's Ringstrasse in the Innere Stadt, built by the Habsburgs at the close of the 19th century to display the imperial collection, and is among Europe's greatest art museums. Inside the majestic domed building designed by Hasenauer and Semper lie treasures from Ancient Egypt, Greece and Rome through the Renaissance and Baroque: a large group of works by Pieter Bruegel the Elder, plus Titian, Velázquez, Raphael and Rembrandt, alongside the imperial gold and silver and arms collections. Its café cupola and marble halls are artworks in themselves. For art lovers it is the supreme hall to survey a millennium of Western art and immerse in Habsburg taste.
