Introduction

The Hôtel de Ville (Brussels Town Hall) stands on the south side of the Grand Place — a UNESCO World Heritage site in central Brussels, Belgium — and is the pinnacle of Gothic civic architecture. Dating to the 15th century, it rises to a slender spire some 96 m high crowned by a statue of St Michael, its façade and halls rich with sculpture, heraldry and gilding that narrate the glory of the Duchy of Brabant. It is the only surviving medieval original on the square, alongside the guild houses forming this listed jewel. From the tower you overlook the old town's grid and, in the distance, the Atomium — the first stop to grasp Low Countries' urban civilisation and the spirit of civic self-rule.
