Introduction

The Itaipu Dam spans the Paraná River on the border between Foz do Iguaçu, Brazil, and Paraguay, built and jointly run by the two countries under the 1973 treaty as Itaipu Binacional; its first unit entered service in 1984. With 20 generating units totalling 14,000 MW, it is one of the world's largest producers of clean renewable energy, officially supplying about 8.7% of Brazil's electricity and 86.4% of Paraguay's. "Itaipu" means "the singing stone" in Tupi-Guarani. The Visitor Reception Centre on Av. Tancredo Neves, about 12 km north of town, runs panoramic buses to the crest (225 m above sea level): on one side a reservoir of some 29 billion cubic metres, on the other the spillway and the river valley, whose maximum discharge of about 62,000 m³/s out-roars even the Iguazu Falls. On Friday and Saturday evenings the "Itaipu Illuminated" show takes over the Central Lookout with live music from the triple frontier. The plant sits about half an hour from Iguazu Falls, making an easy one-day pairing with the falls and the Three Borders Landmark.

✨ Highlights

1
A 14 GW giant
Twenty units totalling 14,000 MW make it a global leader in clean energy, officially supplying about 8.7% of Brazil's and 86.4% of Paraguay's electricity.
2
Built by two nations
Treaty-signed in 1973 and first power in 1984, the plant is jointly run as Itaipu Binacional; "Itaipu" means "the singing stone" in Tupi-Guarani. The main dam is 196 m high, the whole structure about 7.9 km long.
3
Crest and Central Lookout
Panoramic buses reach the crest at 225 m above sea level: a reservoir of some 29 billion cubic metres on one side, the spillway and river valley on the other — the classic photo stop.
4
The spillway spectacle
At full discharge the spillway passes about 62,000 m³/s, more than the average flow of the Iguazu Falls, with mist and roar audible kilometres away.
5
Inside the powerhouse
The R$185 Special Circuit enters the heart of the plant and the Central Control Room; the R$48 Biological Refuge tour adds tree planting and a 2 km walk among tapirs and birds.
6
Light show paused for its LED makeover
After nearly 24 years the Itaipu Illuminated show held its last night on 8 August 2026 and is being relit with LEDs, due back in 2027 - with plans to expand from Friday-Saturday to four or five nights a week.

💡 Tips

• Do the falls in the morning and the Panoramic in the afternoon, or the reverse; squeezing in the Special Circuit the same day is too much.
• Arrive 30 minutes early — tour buses leave on time and a missed departure can mean another half-hour wait.
• For spillway discharge, call +55 45 3520-6900 ahead to ask whether the gates will open; releases depend on reservoir operations.
• The light show runs only Friday and Saturday evenings and sells out online; the crest is windy at night, so bring a layer.
• The Paraguayan side (Hernandarias) has its own lookout, but crossing over means border formalities — don't improvise at the gate.
• Families will like the Biological Refuge tour (Wednesday–Monday): tree planting plus an easy 2 km trail with tapirs and toucans.
