Introduction
Banya Bashi Mosque is an ancient 16th-century Ottoman mosque in Sofia. With its elegant dome and tall minaret, it is a vivid witness to Sofia's blend of religions and history, and one of Bulgaria's historic mosques still in use. Built during Ottoman rule, reportedly designed by the famous Ottoman architect Mimar Sinan, it is a precious remnant of Ottoman architecture in Bulgaria. Built of brick and stone, it has a large dome and a slender minaret, elegant and solemn. Its name "Banya Bashi" means "many baths", from being built atop former hot-spring baths. Notably, around this mosque in central Sofia, an Orthodox church, a mosque, a synagogue and a Catholic church stand side by side, hailed as the "Square of Tolerance", vividly reflecting Sofia's tradition of religious coexistence. As a working religious site, visit with respect for Muslims. Respect etiquette: dress modestly (women bring a headscarf, no exposure), remove shoes inside, keep quiet, avoid services, don't disturb worshippers, don't walk through prayer crowds; ask before photographing, follow rules; dignified, civilized visit.
