Introduction
Formally the Museo Salesiano Maggiorino Borgatello, this institution was founded on 18 September 1893 by Salesian missionaries, making it Chile's third-oldest museum, and named for its first director, the Italian priest Maggiorino Borgatello. It was created to record the cultural and ecological richness of the Strait of Magellan region, and its collections now span ethnography, archaeology, history, flora and fauna, palaeontology and industry across four levels: tools and crafts of the Selk'nam, Tehuelche, Yaghan and Kawesqar peoples, documents and objects from the mission period, local wildlife and fossils, whaling and petroleum material, and a recreation of the Cave of the Hands rock art. The photographic archive of Alberto de Agostini, an Italian mountaineer priest, stands out both as geographical survey and as images of communities that have since disappeared; models of the Beagle and of the Ancud, which claimed the region for Chile in 1843, are also on show. The two-storey building sits beside the Maria Auxiliadora sanctuary with a three-storey extension, its galleries grown from 700 to 1,700 square metres. Note the split morning and afternoon sessions and the Monday and Sunday closure.
