Introduction

The 'Navel of the World' refers to a mysterious round stone cluster beside Ahu Te Pito Kura on Rapa Nui's north coast — one large and four smaller stones, called Te Pito o Te Henua ('navel of the world'). Legend says the round stone was brought by a Polynesian chief as a symbol of life's origin; touching it is said to bring luck, and it is nicknamed the magnetic stone for reportedly affecting compasses. Nearby once stood Paro, the island's largest moai (~10 m, ~80 t), now fallen — a testament to Rapa Nui stonework and seafaring.
