Introduction

Orongo, on the rim of the Rano Kau crater at the island's southwest corner, is the ceremonial village where the 'Birdman' (Tangata Manu) competition took place. Stone houses and petroglyphs survive well; the site overlooks the crater lake and the Pacific.
