Introduction

The Easter Island Post Office is Hanga Roa's only branch of Correos de Chile, tucked below the municipality and fire station on the slope seaward of the Atamu Tekena / Te Pito O Te Henua crossing. It sells stamps and postcards printed with moai and Rapa Nui motifs, and mailing a card to the other side of the world costs just CLP 1000 — many travellers come specifically for a postmark from the edge of the world. The office once stamped passports with a decorative moai mark, but that service has moved to the island's Sernatur tourist information office, with a notice on the door. Just a small room, yet one of Rapa Nui's most ritualised stops.
