Introduction
Kari Kari sits on the rim of the Rano Kau volcano on Easter Island's southwest coast—a roughly 400-meter gap in the crater wall carved by marine erosion, through which lava once spilled into the Pacific. The area lies within Rapa Nui National Park (a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1995) along the same southwest coast as the Orongo birdman village, with views to the Motu Nui, Motu Iti and Motu Kao Kao islets. Travel accounts describe petroglyphs of fishing scenes on the walls of nearby caves.
