Ahu Vinapu

Introduction

Ahu Vinapu stands on the south coast of Rapa Nui just east of Mataveri Airport, and is the site most often discussed for its masonry. Two ceremonial platforms, Vinapu I and II, include a retaining wall of large basalt blocks dressed and dry-fitted so tightly that a blade will hardly enter the joints, a precision that echoes Inca walls around Cusco. Thor Heyerdahl used it to argue for contact between South America and Polynesia, one of the island's best-known debates, although mainstream archaeology today treats Rapa Nui culture as an independent local development and reads the resemblance as convergence in craft. Several toppled moai and scattered red pukao topknots lie around the site, the scoria for those hats quarried at Puna Pau. The reward is in the detail: stand close to see how courses step back and how corners lock, rather than shooting one wide frame and leaving. Access requires a Rapa Nui National Park ticket, in 2026 CLP 95,000 for foreign adults, valid ten days from first entry and covering twelve sites, and an accredited local guide must accompany every visit. Rano Raraku and Orongo allow one entry each, while Vinapu can be revisited. The park runs 09:00-18:00 from April to November and to 20:00 in summer; there is no shade, so bring water, sun protection and an offline copy of your ticket.
