Aarhus Cathedral

Introduction

Aarhus Cathedral is a grand old church in Aarhus's old town. As one of Denmark's longest and tallest churches, this solemn Gothic cathedral stands at the old-town center, a major historical landmark and spiritual symbol of Aarhus. Founded in the Middle Ages (12th-13th centuries) in Romanesque style and rebuilt around the 15th century in Gothic style, it is among Denmark's largest churches, its length and soaring tower ranking near the top nationally (reportedly Denmark's longest church). The soaring red-brick tower is a striking landmark on Aarhus's skyline. Inside, the lofty, solemn space, though simplified after the Reformation (Denmark is Protestant), still preserves precious historical art: fine medieval murals (faded, ancient religious frescoes on walls and vaults), a splendid altarpiece, an old organ, a baptismal font and historic decorations and memorials, full of historical and artistic flavor. The church sits at the heart of the old town, surrounded by old streets and squares. Visitors can enter to admire the precious medieval murals and relics and feel Aarhus's heritage.
