Introduction

Egeskov Castle was built in 1554 by Frands Brockenhuus; its name means 'oak forest', a nod to the volume of timber driven into the lake bed as foundation piles. Two long houses joined by a thick wall stand on an island in a roughly square moat about 70 metres across, making it one of Europe's best-preserved Renaissance water castles, still owned by the Ahlefeldt-Laurvig-Bille family and upheld without any public funding. Hans Christian Andersen visited in 1842. The estate spreads across 17 themed gardens with a yew maze and fernery, a treetop walkway through the beech canopy, one of Europe's largest playgrounds and museums of vintage vehicles, machinery and dolls, while the castle interior holds five centuries of family furniture and treasures.
