Egeskov Castle, built in 1554, is among Europe's best-preserved Renaissance water castles, standing near Kvaerndrup in southern Funen on a lake of its own making — two long houses joined by a wall, ringed by water. Hans Christian Andersen visited in 1842, and the fairy-tale spirit endures: 17 themed gardens with a yew labyrinth and fernery, a treetop walkway through the beech canopy, museums of vintage cars, steam engines and dolls, plus one of Europe's biggest playgrounds.
