Introduction

The Funen Village (Den Fynske Landsby) is an open-air museum about 3 km south of Odense recreating rural life on Funen in the 18th and 19th centuries. Some 25 traditional timber farmhouses, a windmill, a school and a vicarage were moved here from across the island and now stand among meadows, orchards and a lake, with poultry and livestock in the yards and costumed interpreters demonstrating ploughing, spinning, weaving and cooking in season. Open April to October, with closing pushed to 18:00 from mid-July to early August. It is the counterpart to the city's H.C. Andersen Museum - one shows where the fairy tales came from, the other the world they came from: Easter wreaths, carriage parades, an open-air stage and folk dancing bring the countryside back to life at festival time.
