Introduction
Kerimaki Wooden Church stands in the village of Kerimaki near Savonlinna in south-eastern Finland and is widely regarded as one of the largest wooden churches in the world, known for its all-wood structure and vast interior. Built in the nineteenth century, it has a pale timber exterior, a tall bell tower and a spacious nave that can hold a great many worshippers, with a wooden structure that is distinctive in both acoustics and appearance. The surroundings are typical Finnish lake country, ringed by forest and water and especially calm and beautiful in summer. The church is an important local place of worship and a classic stop in the Saimaa lake area.
