Introduction

Luostarinmäki is Turku's intact 18th-century wooden crafts quarter, one of the few old hillsides to survive the 1827 fire, now an open-air museum of about 30 workshops and homes. Artisans still make glass, silver, bookbinding and bread by old methods you can watch and learn. Narrow lanes, wooden stairs and gardens glow warm at sunset — Finland's best-preserved historic neighbourhood and a living fossil of Turku's journey from Hanseatic port to modern city.
