Introduction
The Ramparts of Aigues-Mortes are the medieval fortifications of the town of Aigues-Mortes in southern France, built in the 13th century on the orders of King Louis IX (Saint Louis) to create a Mediterranean port for the Crusades. The walls run about 1,640 metres and are remarkably well preserved; a walkway lets visitors circle the town and climb the Tour de Constance for views over the Camargue wetlands and salt pans.
