Place de la Concorde

Introduction

Place de la Concorde lies on the Right Bank of the Seine in Paris and is the city's largest square, a key point on its central axis linking the Champs-Elysees at one end with the Tuileries Garden at the other. At its centre stands the obelisk from the Luxor Temple in Egypt, its shaft carved with ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs and the square's most striking landmark; on either side are richly decorated fountains whose jets and sculpture are quite grand. Eighteenth-century buildings ring the square, giving it a broad, open feel. The square was an execution site during the French Revolution, so it carries both grandeur and a heavy history; it is free and makes a good stop on a city walk.
