Introduction
Luostarinmäki Handicrafts Museum is a unique, charming open-air living-history museum—an miraculously preserved old wooden crafts quarter, like a frozen 18th–19th-century Finnish craftsmen's district, letting visitors step into past Finnish life and traditional crafts—a historically rich, unique Turku sight. It sits on an old-town hillside; uniquely, the wooden quarter survived the 1827 fire that destroyed most of Turku, preserved in situ as original 18th–19th-century urban wooden architecture. Now an open-air crafts museum, visitors stroll the narrow lanes and old cabins, entering restored workshops and homes; in summer, costumed craftsmen demonstrate traditional crafts (weaving, shoemaking, smithing, pottery, baking), vividly reviving the craftsmen's quarter. Exploring Luostarinmäki and its time-frozen craftsmen's district is a uniquely historic Turku experience.
