Introduction

The flagship of Marseille's 2013 European Capital of Culture year, designed by Rudy Ricciotti: a latticed concrete shell - lace cast in stone - wrapping a seafront block, its perforations letting light and salt wind pour through. A high footbridge joins it to the 17th-century Fort Saint-Jean, new architecture and old ramparts eyeing each other across a moat. Permanent galleries take Mediterranean civilisation as their theme, from market food to harbour trade, while the free rooftop platform has become a local sunset fixture.

✨ Highlights

1
Concrete Lace
The perforated shell throws shifting lace-pattern shadows all day long.
2
Fort Footbridge
A sky-walk links the museum to 17th-century Fort Saint-Jean - one ticket, two worlds.
3
Mediterranean Story
Galleries run from food and faith to trade, mapping how the sea made its people.
4
Free Rooftop
The top-level platform costs nothing and frames the strait and city skyline.
5
Port-side Icon
Minutes on foot from the Vieux-Port, as conspicuous in place as in design.
