Introduction

Checkpoint Charlie was the most famous border crossing along the Berlin Wall during the Cold War. This historic site, bearing the tense memories of Cold War confrontation, is a key symbol for understanding the years of Germany's division and feeling the history of the Cold War. In the Cold War era when Berlin was split by the Wall into east and west, Checkpoint Charlie was one of the few border passages for diplomats, Allied personnel and foreigners to move between the two halves (it was the third Allied checkpoint, named "Charlie" after the letter C). As the front line of direct confrontation between the two blocs, Checkpoint Charlie witnessed many tense, hair-trigger moments—most famously in 1961, when American and Soviet tanks faced off across the street, rifles at the ready, a classic image of Cold War tension. Today the Wall has long fallen, but Checkpoint Charlie is preserved as a witness to history: on the original site a replica of the famous white wooden guardhouse and sign (the famous warning "You are leaving the American Sector") has been reconstructed, and costumed "Allied soldiers" often pose for photos with visitors (note that they charge). Beside the checkpoint is the Berlin Wall Museum (Mauermuseum), which through numerous artifacts, photos and stories details the history of the Wall and the thrilling escape tales. Visiting Checkpoint Charlie and learning the history of the Cold War division is a place of great historical tension in Berlin.
