Introduction

This watchtower at Schlesischer Busch is one of the few GDR border towers to survive in Berlin. Its slim silhouette still pokes above the trees, once the eyes of border troops watching the death strip along the Spree. A small exhibition inside recounts the border zone and escape attempts, and a narrow iron ladder climbs to the lookout cabin, where the former line of barbed wire and searchlights is now leafy riverfront parkland — a disorienting, unforgettable contrast.
