Introduction

Frankfurt's Icon Museum occupies the former house of the Teutonic Order on Brüderstraße, a single block from Römerberg and the cathedral. Built around a private donation, the collection holds around a thousand Byzantine-style icons from Greece, Russia and the Balkans, making it a rarity among German museums. Gold grounds, tempera on wood and strictly stylised figures quickly teach the visual grammar of Orthodox imagery.
