Introduction

Housed in the medieval Carmelite monastery in the old town, Frankfurt's Archaeological Museum counts the cloister itself among its exhibits. The collection focuses on the prehistory and Roman past of the Rhine-Main region, with finds from Nida, the Roman town that once stood in the Frankfurt area, alongside Mediterranean pottery and sculpture. The cloister also preserves Jörg Ratgeb's monumental sixteenth-century frescoes, among the most significant Renaissance wall paintings in Germany.
