Introduction

Sant'Andrea della Valle stands at the corner of Corso Vittorio Emanuele II and Piazza Vidoni, one of the most complete High Baroque churches in Rome. Begun in 1591 for the Theatines, its dome was designed by Carlo Maderno and its façade finished by Carlo Rainaldi in 1665; the dome is the third largest in Rome after St Peter's and the Pantheon, frescoed by Lanfranco with the Glory of Paradise, with Domenichino's Four Evangelists on the pendentives. It is famous as the setting of Act I of Puccini's Tosca and holds the tombs of Popes Pius II and Pius III. Entry is free.

✨ Highlights

1
Rome's third-largest dome
Designed by Maderno, smaller only than St Peter's and the Pantheon — the yardstick of Roman Baroque scale.
2
Glory of Paradise
Lanfranco's 1625-1627 dome fresco, clouds and saints spiralling upward, a landmark of Roman ceiling painting.
3
Four Evangelists
Domenichino's restrained pendentives against Lanfranco's exuberance — two temperaments in one dome.
4
Act I of Tosca
Puccini set the opera's first act here; music lovers come to find the wall.
5
Two papal tombs
Pius II and Pius III are buried here — the latter reigned 26 days.
6
The 1665 façade
Rainaldi's layered Baroque front is the visual anchor of Piazza Vidoni.
