Introduction

Pompeii is an ancient Roman city buried by volcanic ash and brought back to light, frozen at the moment of its destruction nearly two thousand years ago, perfectly preserving Roman life, a deep and precious sight. Pompeii, near Naples at the foot of Vesuvius, is a world-famous ancient Roman city site. Once prosperous, in about 79 AD Vesuvius erupted violently, burying the whole city in ash within moments, killing many and freezing Pompeii in time for millennia. The ash acted as a time capsule, preserving the city's appearance almost intact. Excavations revealed streets, shops, houses, temples, theaters, baths, squares and even wall paintings and graffiti, letting us see Roman life directly. Most moving are the plaster casts of victims, reminding us to remember the dead with solemnity. Visiting Pompeii, remembering the dead and feeling history's vicissitudes, is a deep, precious sight.
