Introduction

Mount Vesuvius is a famous, majestic active volcano by the Bay of Naples. Climbing to its summit to overlook the huge crater and the open bay is a stunning, deep experience, a spectacular sight. Vesuvius rises by the Bay of Naples, one of Europe's most famous active volcanoes and among the world's most dangerous. Most famous for its 79 AD eruption that buried Pompeii and Herculaneum. Now a national park, visitors take a shuttle (or drive) to the mid-slope lot, then hike up a gravel path to the summit: from the rim you look down into the deep, grand, desolate crater (with occasional wisps of geothermal steam), feeling nature's raw power; from the top you see the grand Bay of Naples (blue water, Naples, Pompeii below), a spectacular view. Visiting Naples and climbing majestic Vesuvius to overlook the crater and bay is a spectacular sight.
