Castel dell’Ovo
Castel dell'Ovo is Naples' oldest castle, rising on the tiny islet of Megaride just off the shore; legend holds that the Roman poet Virgil hid a magic egg in its foundations, and as long as the egg held, Naples would stand safe. It passed through Roman, Norman, Angevin and Aragonese hands, and its terrace offers a superb picture of the Bay of Naples framed by Mount Vesuvius.

Naples National Archaeological Museum
The Naples National Archaeological Museum, housed in an 18th-century Bourbon cavalry barracks in the city centre, is Europe's greatest treasury of Greco-Roman antiquity. Its core comes from Pompeii and Herculaneum, the cities buried by Vesuvius: marble statues, bronze fittings and frescoes still vivid in colour, plus the celebrated Alexander Mosaic depicting the Battle of Issus. The Farnese Bull, a colossal marble group, astonishes with its carved detail. On the upper floor, the Secret Cabinet displays Pompeii's erotic frescoes and Roman erotica — once reserved for scholars, now open to all. For anyone visiting Pompeii, this museum is the essential prologue or epilogue.

Castel Nuovo, the Angevins' Maschio Angioino, was begun by Charles I in 1279, and its white-marble triumphal arch marks a key moment when Renaissance style reached southern Italy; its towers now hold a civic museum. Old and new pair neatly in a half-hour of metro plus walking.

National Archaeological Museum of Naples
One of the world's great archaeology museums, founded in the 18th century under Charles III of Bourbon and housed in a late-16th-century cavalry barracks. Each floor has its brief: Roman sculpture from the Farnese collection below - the Farnese Bull and Hercules among antiquity's largest statues; Pompeii and Herculaneum frescoes and mosaics above, including the Alexander Mosaic's million tesserae recreating a battle; and the Gabinetto Segreto gathering the adult-themed finds from the buried cities. Doing this museum before Pompeii itself is the classic order.

Teatro di San Carlo
San Carlo opened in November 1737, forty-one years before La Scala, and holds the title of the world's longest continuously running opera house - Neapolitans wear the fact as a catchphrase. Rebuilt by Antonio Niccolini after the 1816 fire, its horseshoe auditorium stacks six tiers of boxes in gilding and crimson velvet, a textbook Italian acoustic shell. Daytime tours thread the hall, royal box and backstage in about forty-five minutes, and season tickets for opera and ballet run gentler than at Europe's peer houses.
