Introduction
The Arch of Constantine stands beside the Colosseum in Rome and is one of the city's most complete and imposing triumphal arches, built in the early fourth century AD to commemorate Constantine I's victory at the Battle of the Milvian Bridge. It has three archways and stands about twenty-one metres high, covered with fine reliefs, many of them taken from earlier buildings of the Trajanic and Hadrianic periods; this reuse of older material was not unusual in Roman architecture and makes the arch a patchwork of different eras. It stands close to the Colosseum and the Roman Forum and is free to visit, usually seen as a stop on a walk around the Colosseum area; a short pause is enough.
