Introduction
Murano lies in the Venetian Lagoon and is made up of several small islands linked by bridges; it is one of Europe's best-known centres of glassmaking. From the Middle Ages Venetian glassmakers were concentrated here so that their furnaces would not endanger the wooden buildings of the main island, and over time a complete glass industry and craft tradition grew up. The island has a glass museum, several workshops where visitors can watch blowing and drawing techniques, and shops displaying glassware, ornaments and jewellery. Its streets follow the canals and feel more relaxed than the main island. It is about twenty to thirty minutes from Venice by water bus and is often combined with Burano in a single day.
