Introduction
The Royal Palace (Det kongelige slott) stands on rising ground at the end of Karl Johans gate and is the official residence of the Norwegian monarch and one of Oslo's landmark buildings. Designed by architect Hans Linstow, it was begun in 1825 and completed in 1849 in a Neoclassical style, with yellow plastered walls and a central columned portico facing an open palace square. The palace interior is normally closed and opens only for organised tours in summer, which require advance tickets and fixed entry times; the square and the surrounding park are open free of charge all year and are used by residents for walks and recreation. The daily Changing of the Guard takes place on the square and draws onlookers. Note that security and ceremonial arrangements are in place, so follow on-site instructions.
