Introduction

Akershus Fortress (Akershus festning) sits on a headland in central Oslo overlooking the Oslofjord and the harbour, and has been one of Norway's most important military strongholds since the Middle Ages. Construction began in the late 13th century under King Hakon V, and over the following centuries the complex was expanded, serving both as fortification and royal residence. Within its walls are the medieval castle, the Resistance Museum and the royal mausoleum, while the outer ramparts, courtyards and paths are open to the public for strolling. From the walls and terraces there are wide views over the harbour, the City Hall area and the fjord. The site is large and on high ground, so wear comfortable shoes and note that some areas may be closed temporarily for military use or events.
