Introduction
The Ski Museum (Skimuseet) is housed in the Holmenkollen ski jump building in Oslo and is one of the world's oldest ski museums, opened in 1923. Its displays trace more than four thousand years of skiing history, showing skis, poles, clothing and equipment from different periods, and include a section on polar exploration that tells how Nansen, Amundsen and others used skis on their expeditions. Combined with the Holmenkollen jump, a visit can be extended by going up to the top viewing platform for views over Oslo and the fjord. It is a key place to understand Norway's skiing tradition and outdoor culture. As it sits on a hillside, reaching it involves a metro ride plus an uphill walk, so allow half a day to see it together with the jump.
