Introduction

Castelo de São Jorge crowns Lisbon's highest hill — the city's oldest defensive core, shaped in turn by Moors, Christians and the royal court. Surviving walls, towers and an archaeological site trace Lisbon from its Islamic to medieval phases. From the ramparts, the red-tiled old town, the Tagus and the 25 April Bridge unfold below — the classic vantage over Lisbon.
