Introduction
Cristo Rei stands on high ground at Pragal in Almada, on the south bank of the Tagus facing Lisbon, Portugal. The statue of Christ with arms outstretched, together with its pedestal, rises roughly a hundred meters and is a major religious monument in Portugal, inspired by Christ the Redeemer in Rio de Janeiro. An elevator leads up to the viewing platform, where sweeping views open over Lisbon, the 25 de Abril Bridge and the Tagus, especially magnificent at sunset. It offers both a sense of religious devotion and one of the finest vantage points over the Lisbon skyline.
