Introduction
The Águas Livres Aqueduct in Lisbon, Portugal, is a large stone aqueduct built in the 18th century to supply the city with water, its main works completed in the mid-1700s and regarded as one of the notable engineering feats of its time. Its most famous stretch crosses the Alcântara valley as a long arcade of arches, the tallest piers especially striking. The associated Amoreiras reservoir, known as Mãe d'Água, has a vast interior now often used for exhibitions and events. Parts of the aqueduct are open to visitors, who can walk along the top of the arches and look down over the city.
