Cathedral de Toledo
Introduction
Toledo Cathedral is one of Spain's most magnificent and important cathedrals, and the pinnacle of Spanish Gothic architecture. This grand church rising in the center of historic Toledo is famed for its splendid architecture, gorgeously beautiful interior and precious art treasures—Toledo's not-to-be-missed number-one sight. Toledo is a city of great antiquity that long served as Spain's capital and religious center (still the seat of the Catholic primate of Spain), thus with extremely deep historical and religious heritage. Toledo Cathedral is the chief cathedral of Spanish Catholicism, of the highest status, and one of Spain's grandest and most important cathedrals. Built in the 13th–15th centuries (again on the site of a former mosque), it is a magnificent Gothic building hailed as one of the pinnacles of Spanish Gothic architecture—vast in scale and grand. The interior is extremely lofty, grand, solemn and beautiful—forest-like soaring stone columns, a majestic dome, brilliant huge stained-glass windows, and many gorgeous chapels and art treasures, awe-inspiring. The most stunning, famous treasures inside include: the hugely luxurious main altarpiece made of gilded woodcarvings of many biblical scenes (a Gothic retablo); and a unique Baroque masterpiece called the 'Transparent Altar'—'El Transparente', an exquisite, complex Baroque sculpture and architectural work that cleverly uses skylight to create a stunning, beautiful sacred effect as if heaven's light pours down; besides, the cathedral holds rich art treasures (including works by El Greco, Goya and Titian), a splendid choir stall, and a precious treasury (with beautiful monstrances and more). Visiting Toledo Cathedral, awed by the grand beauty of the pinnacle of Spanish Gothic architecture, and paying homage to the gorgeous main altarpiece and the Transparent Altar, is a stunning Toledo experience.
