Introduction

San Martín Bridge is a grand, ancient medieval stone bridge spanning the Tagus in Toledo—a Gothic old bridge soaring over the deep Tagus gorge, linking the old city and the far bank; it is a witness to Toledo's history and defenses and a great place to enjoy the old city and river-valley scenery. Toledo's old city is wrapped on three sides by the winding Tagus River; historically, the bridges across the Tagus linking inside and outside the perilous hill city were vital passages and gateways. San Martín Bridge is one of Toledo's two famous medieval bridges across the Tagus (the other is the Alcántara Bridge). This grand, sturdy Gothic stone bridge was built in the Middle Ages, its several huge stone arches soaring over the deep Tagus gorge; at each end stands a sturdy defensive gate tower (as the city's gateway and fortification), majestic and antique, weathered over centuries—an important witness to Toledo's defensive history. Walking or standing on (or beside) San Martín Bridge, visitors can enjoy: the Tagus winding through the deep gorge below, the magnificent natural scenery on both banks, and part of the old city of Toledo rising on the hill above the river bend (from this angle you also see the charming interplay of old city and valley)—old bridge, deep gorge, river and old city interweave with a quaint, grand charm. In recent years, near San Martín Bridge a thrilling attraction has been added—a high zip line (Tirolina) flying over the Tagus gorge, and a glass walkway on the old bridge overlooking the deep gorge below—adding a different kind of fun and perspective.
