Introduction
The Puente de Alcantara crosses the Tagus river on the eastern side of Toledo's old town, with origins reaching back to Roman times and several rebuilds and reinforcements in the Middle Ages. Built of stone arches spanning the water, it has defensive towers at both ends, serving both as a crossing and a defence, and was once a key entry to Toledo from the east. Today it remains a historic bridge linking the old town with the far bank, and from it you can look out over the Tagus gorge, the old-town skyline and the surrounding hills. Close to the Puerta del Sol and San Juan de los Reyes, it suits a visit on a riverside walk, showing Toledo's setting as a river-gorge fortress city.
