Dufourspitze

Introduction

The Dufourspitze, at 4,634 metres, is Switzerland's highest summit and the second-highest in the Alps after Mont Blanc, reigning over the Monte Rosa massif. It honours General Guillaume-Henri Dufour, the Swiss cartographer whose mid-nineteenth-century maps laid the foundation of the national survey. A largely British party made the first ascent in 1855, a landmark of alpine climbing history. For most travellers, gazing at its enormous ice walls from the Gornergrat terrace or the Matterhorn Glacier Paradise is awe enough; the summit itself belongs to mountaineers with full glaciated-alpine experience.
