Zermatt Travel Guide

Car-free resort under the Matterhorn: sensational peaks, Gornergrat views and lake hikes.

📍 Destination Overview

Zermatt sits deep in a valley in the canton of Valais in southern Switzerland and is the gateway to the world's most famous peak, the Matterhorn. This pyramidal lone peak rises 4,478 m, sharp-edged and dominating the skyline—a symbol of Switzerland. To protect the environment, the whole town bans gasoline cars; only electric shuttles and horse carriages pass through. Take the cogwheel railway up to the Gornergrat viewing platform to take in the Matterhorn, more than twenty snow peaks and the Gorner Glacier. The Five Lakes hike in summer shows the peak's reflection, while winter is a top-tier European ski resort. The purity of the car-free town and the grandeur of the snow peak make an Alpine classic.
