Breithorn
At 4,164 metres, the Breithorn sprawls across the snowfields south of Zermatt, its name meaning the broad horn. Thanks to the Klein Matterhorn lift reaching nearly 3,900 metres, the normal route to the summit takes just two or three hours, earning it a reputation as the easiest four-thousander in the Alps and a first big peak for many climbers. The summit panorama is immense, taking in the Matterhorn, the Monte Rosa group and the Italian snowfields. Sightseers can ride the cable car to the viewing platform and stand amid glaciers beneath the mountain's white flanks, taking in genuine 4,000-metre country.

Dufourspitze
The Dufourspitze, at 4,634 metres, is Switzerland's highest summit and the second-highest in the Alps after Mont Blanc, reigning over the Monte Rosa massif. It honours General Guillaume-Henri Dufour, the Swiss cartographer whose mid-nineteenth-century maps laid the foundation of the national survey. A largely British party made the first ascent in 1855, a landmark of alpine climbing history. Sunnegga Paradise
Sunnegga, at about 2,288 metres, is reached from Zermatt in minutes by a funicular through the mountain, and its sunny south-facing terrace has earned it the nickname of the resort's sun deck. Beside the station lies the Leisee, a turquoise lake that mirrors the Matterhorn in summer and serves as the locals' family picnic spot; in winter the slopes above feed straight back down to the valley. Continuing up to Blauherd and the Stellisee brings you to the postcard view of the peak reflected in dark water. Marmot-watching trails delight children, and hikers can link into the five-lakes route from here.

Matterhorn Museum
The Matterhorn Museum stands in the centre of Zermatt, a mountain village in the Valais canton of southern Switzerland, close to the church and main street. Devoted to the history of Zermatt and the Matterhorn, it focuses on the first ascent of the Matterhorn in 1865 and the tragedy that accompanied it, using objects, film and reconstructed scenes to present the history of mountaineering and the changes in village life. Zermatt is a car-free village ringed by Alpine peaks and is itself a base for hiking and skiing. The museum is small and suits an hour's visit between outdoor activities. Afterwards, head to a viewpoint or trail to admire the dramatic shape of the Matterhorn.
